Tenses tell us when an action happens — in the past, present or future. Class 2 IEO tests four tenses: simple present, simple past, simple future and present continuous. Bronze questions identify the tense of a given sentence. Silver questions convert a sentence from one tense to another, including irregular verbs like write/wrote and run/ran. Gold questions identify the tense of each verb in a sentence with two verbs, or select the correct tense based on a time word such as ‘yesterday’, ‘right now’ or ‘tomorrow’.
Which sentence is in the simple past tense?
Correct: C) Rohan kicked the ball over the fence.
'Kicked' is the simple past tense of 'kick'. It tells us the action is already finished and happened before now.
Change this sentence to the past tense: 'Maya writes a letter to her friend.' Which option is correct?
Correct: C) Maya wrote a letter to her friend.
The simple past tense of 'writes' is 'wrote'. This is an irregular verb — its past tense does not follow the regular -ed pattern.
Which sentence is in the simple future tense?
Correct: C) Rohan will visit his grandparents next week.
'Will visit' indicates a future action — something that has not yet happened. 'Will + base verb' forms the simple future tense.
In the sentence 'Yesterday Aarav ran to school because he forgot his lunch box', what tense is each underlined verb?
Correct: B) 'Ran' is past tense; 'forgot' is also past tense.
'Ran' is the past tense of 'run' and 'forgot' is the past tense of 'forget'. Both describe actions that happened in the past. The word 'Yesterday' confirms this.
Which sentence correctly uses the present continuous tense?
Correct: C) Priya is painting a picture at the moment.
Present continuous = is/am/are + verb-ing. Option C correctly uses 'is painting'. Option B incorrectly says 'is studied' — it should be 'is studying'. Option D is past continuous.
