Vocabulary Questions for Class 2 English Olympiad | Grade 2 IEO | Glovoy

Class 2 English 5 free questions · Updated March 2026

Vocabulary questions in Class 2 IEO test synonyms (words with similar meanings) and antonyms (words with opposite meanings). Knowing many words — and the relationships between them — is what separates children who score at Bronze from those who score at Gold. Bronze questions identify the synonym or antonym of a simple everyday word. Silver questions require choosing between near-synonyms (two words that seem similar but differ in strength or shade of meaning). Gold questions find antonym pairs hidden within a sentence, requiring the child to analyse each word’s meaning carefully.

Which word is a synonym for 'happy'?

A sad
B angry
C joyful
D tired
▶ Show Answer

Correct: C) joyful

A synonym is a word with a similar meaning. 'Joyful' means very happy — it is the closest synonym of 'happy' among the four options.

2
Silver

Choose the word that is an antonym for 'ancient'.

A old
B modern
C historical
D traditional
▶ Show Answer

Correct: B) modern

An antonym is a word with the opposite meaning. 'Ancient' means very old; its antonym is 'modern', which means new or current. 'Old' and 'historical' are similar in meaning to 'ancient', not opposite.

Maya said the soup was 'boiling hot'. Which word is closest in meaning to 'boiling'?

A cold
B warm

A ant and food
