Patterns is one of the highest-scoring topics in Class 2 IMO for children who spot the rule quickly. Bronze questions use simple skip-counting sequences (add 5 each time). Silver questions involve multiplicative patterns or arrangements that grow in a predictable way. Gold questions present rules that are harder to spot — such as multiply-then-add, or tiling patterns where the number of pieces follows a formula. Identifying the rule in one or two steps is the skill that separates a Bronze score from a Gold one.
